普段から外人と話す機会が多かったので、医学翻訳より日常会話の方が得意だという人もいると思う。元々英語が好きで英字新聞や洋書の多読をしてた人は確かな英語力を持っている。ぼくは英語に限らず読書習慣がなかったので洋書を何冊も読みこなした経験がなく、ラジオ講座も4月のテキストだけ買ってすぐ挫折していたタイプだ。そんなわけで、医薬翻訳者になっても貧弱な英語力が足かせになっている。ぼくは翻訳者になって今年で3年目だ。ここらでちょっと背伸びしたいと言うか、もうちょっと実力を延ばしたいというか、そんな感じです。それと、小手先のセコ技ばかりじゃ頭打ちになっちゃう。土台からしっかり基礎固めしたいとか、中期的目標として英語の裾野を広げたいとか、思ってます。肝心な英語力が足りないと仕事もイマイチです。

そこでラジオ講座を使って地道に頑張っていこうかな〜なんて思ったワケです。いかにも医学という内容は出てこないけど、たとえば2007年6月のビジネス英会話では、医師と患者の関係というビニエットがあったりするし、技術文書ではあまり見ることがない熟語が豊富なので、速効性はないけど長い目でみるとじわじわ効果が出るんじゃないかと甘い期待をしています。この下の単語帳は週に1回ほど更新しようと思う。毎回10個の表現をアップしますので、ときどき見に来てください。NHKラジオ講座を聞いてる人はわかると思うけど、2008年の実践ビジネス英語から選んでます。最新更新日は10月22日です。

実践ビジネス英語のビニェットでこんなことを言っていた。確かにそうだなと思った。批判するのは簡単だが、何か建設的な意見を持っているかというと、そういう人は少ない。島岡さんも「批判の後には、オルタナティブ（代わりの提案）を忘れずに」とブログに書いていた（ハーバード大学医学部留学・独立日記）。
